Nyos is a technically a crater in the African country of Cameroon. Historians believe that it was created after an asteroid collision thousands of years ago. While the region has remained pretty calm in recent years, the lake sits near an active volcano called the Cameroon Volcanic Line.

Its last deadly eruption was in August 1986. It released a massive about of CO2 into the air through the bottom of its waters. This caused the deaths of 1,700 humans and 3,000 animals. It’s one of the worst limnic disasters ever recorded. Do you want to be there when it happens again? Thought not.
