The soap opera was about two families of different color (black and white) and how they interacted with one another. The two families were based in Chicago, and were the Marshalls, and the Whitmores. The story lines were that of marriage, business ownership, stolen inheritance and studying at a mature age. It was nominated for many awards, and won the 1990 Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Graphics and Title Design. Generations had over 2 million viewers and changed the way people saw soap operas, as many of the main stars were African-American.
